This lecture will discuss BA/MA student, Sam Kim’s findings from a study on four renditions of “The House of the Rising Sun.” These renditions will be from Georgia Turner, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, and The Animals. The study examined the intentional and unintentional use of specific timbres to convey nuanced meaning and emotion in each rendition. A methodology for analyzing timbre using technologies such as spectrograms and spectrum plots will also be discussed.
