Professor Burstein’s primary areas of interest include Schenkerian analysis and form studies. Among his publications is the textbook co-authored with Joseph Straus, A Concise Introduction to Harmony (Norton, 2016). In 1995 Professor Burstein received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the New School University, and in 2008 he received the Outstanding Publication Award of the Society of Music Theory (SMT). In addition to his scholarly work, he has performed extensively as a pianist for comedy improvisation groups in the NYC area. He has also taught at Mannes College and Columbia University and held an endowed chair at University of Alabama. He is a former President of the Society for Music Theory.
Below is a short video-article by Prof. Poundie Burstein and Prof. Quynh Nguyen that appeared in a recent issue of SMT-V, in which Prof. Burstein discusses a piano work by Mozart, and Prof. Nguyen expertly plays excepts from this piece and related ones while visual aids guide the viewer on the screen.
