Alyssa Regent (MA in Composition and Conducting ’22) is Awarded a PhD Fellowship in Composition at Columbia University

The composition area is thrilled to share that Alyssa Regent has been awarded a coveted spot in the PhD program at Columbia University in Composition. Alyssa began her studies in the sciences before discovering at Hunter that composing was her true calling. She worked with Professors Shafer Mahoney, David Fulmer, and Suzanne Farrin over her BA and MA degrees at Hunter where she won numerous awards such as the Richard Burke Scholar. She took advantage of every opportunity the composition area provided and her music shows a depth of dedication and artistry beyond her years. Her academic performance is as stunning as her music and the entire faculty wishes her well in her next adventure. 

Alyssa Regent (b. 1995) was born on the islands of Guadeloupe (FR) and studied at Hunter College New York, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in composition magna cum laude under professors such as David Fulmer and Shafer Mahoney. In 2019, she participated in the Porto Piano Festival as a student pianist and in 2021 she was a Fromm Foundation Fellow at the 77th Composers’ Conference in Boston, MA. She is currently a master’s student in conducting and composition under Suzanne Farrin and David Fulmer at Hunter College, New York. She was awarded the Richard Burke Merit Scholarship and Gloria Bierman Endowed Award from the music department at Hunter College and is an ASCAP Morton Gould composer competition finalist.

Her music has been performed by the Talea Ensemble, Connor Hanick, Jay Campbell, Erin Rogers, NMK Ensemble, among others. In 2020, she started her position as Assistant conductor of the Hunter Symphony Orchestra.
